Fan Directory

Part of "keeping the Circle coming around again" is getting to know other fans.

God bless the Internet, because so many of us have met through the 'net but haven't bumped into each other in person yet. I hope that this page may become something like the "White Pages" of Harry Chapin fans and friends.

If you would like to be included here download this small text file, fill in the answers and e-mail to sgibbons1@kc.rr.com and include the words "fan directory" in the subject line. Attach a photo if you would like and once I get your e-mail, I'll add you to this page and send you your personal link into the page at your entry point.

  • Spouse/Significant Other: Doris (a.k.a. Soulmate and/or List Lady.) Though we're not together anymore, she's still the love of my life. For the record, I'm single and not looking. I recently took on a new client that required I move from Omaha to a Kansas City suburb. Such is life...

That doesn't mean I don't still love and miss Starbuck and Spooky (and even Bananas and Bailey), but I have a new companion. Sadly, he's more of a Willie Nelson fan than a Harry Chapin fan - but I'm working on him!

  • Favorite Song: Impossible question and the answer changes constantly, but probably Mr. Tanner gets my vote, although the group has encouraged me to revisit There Was Only One Choice, which is rising fast up my chart as is the Last Stand newly released version.
  • Favorite Quote: "Sometimes I get this crazy dream that I just take of in my car, but you can travel on ten thousand miles and still stay where you are"

  • Spouse/Significant Other: LuAnne She has shared 23 of my 30 years of Harry.
  • Children: 2 sons 14 & 12
  • Notes: 30 years ago my brother played Harry's 1st album. Could You Put Your Light On Please was my 1st Harry song I ever heard (1st on the album) heck that makes me feel old. I had been to seven concerts over the years and like fine wine Harry just got better with time! I once sang Taxi on stage with Harry (along with about 25 others), I saw the Broadway show The Night That Made America Famous. I have every recording that C. Jason Dermer (of the Harry Chapin Foundation) has produced as fund raisers to preserve his music. And I attended Remembering Harry Chapin at the George St. Playhouse (I sat behind Doug Smith).
  • Favorite Song: What Made America Famous and Story Of A Life
  • Favorite Quote: "I can see it clear out to the end and I whisper to her now again because she shared my life. For more than all the ghosts of glory, she makes up the story, she's the only story ...of my life."

  • Notes: As you might have guessed, I am not old enough to have been able to see Harry live. I really wish I could have had that opportunity. My dad first introduced Harry's music to me at a young age. The first song I remember hearing of his was Flower's Are Red. This song had a big influence on me, I am not a comformist, and I never paint my flowers just green and red. Most people my age have never heard of Harry, but I try to enlighten them. Though his music isn't always uplifting, it is still very meaningful. I think Harry was a great person, and I consider him a true hero.

  • Children: Katie Our daughter whose first music coming home from the hospital was a Harry CD ("Flowers are Red" was playing.) As the cutest member of the family, she is pictured.
  • Notes: My mother was a Harry Chapin fan, and so I grew up listening to his music. As a child I enjoyed the fun and silly songs. My ninth birthday present was tickets to a Harry concert later in the fall. About two hours after the party, we heard on the radio that he had died in a car accident the day before. My junior year of high school, we went to a play at the University of Texas which was the Lies and Legends that rekindled my love for his music, which has shaped so much of my maturing in college.

  • Spouse/Significant Other: Joleen Michalowicz (Mommy Davey)
  • Children: Michael David (Mikey Davey) and Stephen David (Stevie Davey)
  • Notes: I got GSL when I was a wee lad of 16 and wore it out listening to 'Better Place' over and over. I really related to it and how maybe anywhere might be a better place to be. I found it interesting that someone could musically (and emotionally) describe an early morning barroom and the people that one might meet in one. (Having been in one too many myself, I could really relate.) I also tuned in on the plight of the characters, especially the emptiness and loneliness and how that came through in the music especially the 'crying'/sadness of the cello. The whole work, story and music is a true masterpiece. The last three cello notes still tear me up almost every time I hear in (what probably about 25,000 times now!) For some reason, I use this song especially to get in touch with my feelings when I have some life stuff going on. Thank God for Harry because for a few years I was a lost soul and he may have been my only connection to some semblance of the reality of feelings and emotions.

I was a Harry fan for life after my first concert when I met him. This was one of the most (if not the most) significant/memorable moments of my childhood. Harry was a great man. It's funny how we never really realize it until the 'great men' are no longer with us.

  • Favorite Song: A Better Place To Be and Corey's Coming

  • Children: Riana (17) and Katy (almost 15). Unfortunately, also not fans, but they do love "The Waitress Song"!
  • Notes: Fell in love with Harry and his music at the first concert I attended in the late 70's in Norfolk, VA. My hometown is Huntington and my Mom (now 73) worked for Harry's answering service. She remembers his late night calls to check his messages and most vividly remembers calls from Robert Redford and Kenny Rogers the night Harry died.

  • Children: Sweet Thang and Wild Thang - my feline babies (and business associates).
  • Notes: I have liked Harry since about 6th grade - my older sister had bought Heads and Tales and listened to Taxi all the time, but I liked Dogtown better. She thought I was weird (she still does). I saved my money from cleaning houses, bought a record player, bought Short Stories, and a fan was born. Saw Harry live 3 times, usually in the cheap seats, and lining up for a kiss with all the other women! I still have my ticket stubs and T-shirts from each concert. Along the way, I convinced my college roommate and sister-in-law that Harry was great. Now I am a Tom Chapin fan! (kissed him, too - just Steve to go!) Tom comes to Winfield, KS every year for the bluegrass festival.

  • Notes: We were blessed to hear Harry sing at four different occasions each with a different atmophere, one at Shoreline amphitheater hugh crowd, twice at a little hole in the wall in San Francisco which was really cool, little table two feet from the stage. The last time was at Stanford University, he was all by himself, we were laid back on blankets enjoying Harry at his finest. in fact, we cut our Hawaiian vacation short by two days just to make it back in time to see him. I brought him a Hawaiian lei, he wore it. Got my poetry book signed and got that kiss at Shoreline.

  • Favorite Quote: "...no clear cut beginnings and so far no dead-ends" Why? Harry was so full of love and life and with this being so close to the anniversary of his so untimely and undeserved death he had no idea what lied before him. To anyone out there, being on the West Coast I don't get any info into whats happened to the rest of his family, Sandy and his kids?? Or Tom and Steve, Big John??? Would love to hear from someone.

  • Phone: 856-833-1512
  • Age/Born: January 10, 1944 Just thirteen months younger than Harry would be had he lived. Though I think young, unless I'm mistaken, this makes me the chronologically oldest so far in this directory.
  • Spouse/Significant Other: Betsy Fiancee since 1987, but that's another story. Not a Chapin fan, but I love her anyway, in spite of this--her only major--character flaw.
  • Children: Corey Born before the song, and now married. I have photos--taken in August, 1980 when Corey was six years old--of Harry Chapin and Corey together. Unfortunately, I don't have a scanner--people say they look more alike than Corey and I do.
  • Notes: I, briefly, studied guitar/music, but played guitar like a butcher. At Harry's prompting, I wrote a few songs. The first, about Harry himself, was entitled "The Man Who sings Stories." One of the highlights of my life occurred 2 weeks after I finished writing it. Harry appeared at the Academy of Music, in Philadelphia, PA, in November, 1980. Following the concert, as usual, he autographed and sold items, primarily for W.H.Y. When he was finshed, he sat (lounged) on a marble staircase in the lobby, while my brother (John) played the song on guitar and I sang it for Harry and a small group of remaining fans. When we finished, the fans applauded as Harry jumped to his feet, pumped his right arm in the air, and let out with the loudest, strongest "Well all right" I ever heard from him. What a trip!
  • Favorite Song: Too many to list. Just a few are "Better Place to Be", "There Only was One Choice", "Road to Kingdom Come", "Six-string Orchestra" and everything on "The Last Protest Singer" CD.
  • Favorite Quote: Again, too many. One is the combo from the Sequel album--"Sometimes you can't find what you're feelin' till all the words run out"--from Sequel--and "Sometimes words can serve me well; sometimes words can go to hell" (from Story of a Life)".

  • Age/Born: 55 - August 22, 1947
  • Spouse/Significant Other: Yes I have one - but I tend to keep 'my' music (eg. Harry Chapin, Muse, Capercaillie, Saxon, Magnum, Leonard Cohen, My Dying Bride, Pitchshifter) to myself, thus (thankfully) minimising my own exposure to the wilder excesses of Soft Machine, Weather Report and the like.
  • Children: Son Whom died in 1988. His habit was to refer to any record he or I bought which wasn't 'metal', as 'an aberration'.
  • Notes: I'm bonkers and proud of it.

  • Spouse/Significant Other: My best friend, Chad, who has been my buddy for five years (and has put up with my ranting and ravings about Chapin music for five years as well!)
  • Children: None
  • Notes: First heard Harry's music when my dad played Greatest Stories Live on our loud speakers at home. At first, I thought it was another long-haired hippy freak, but once I actually listened to the songs, I liked the guy. I currently have Heads & Tales, Sniper & Other Love Songs, Verities & Balderdash, Greatest Stories Live, Last Protest Singer, and Gold Medal Collection. Slowly but surely, I'll eventually have all of his recordings.
  • Favorite Song: So many are excellent, but if I chose the best of the best, it would be: Same Sad Singer, Last of the Protest Singers, I Wonder What Would Happen To This World, Circle, There Only Was One Choice, and Remember When The Music.
  • Favorite Quote: "Should I just play some rock-n-roll? 'Cause nobody really gives a d--n? I say that's not good enough. There's enough of that kind of stuff."

  • Children: Three beautiful daughters: Hanna 15 years, Leena 12 years and Liisa 10 years
  • Notes: Short Stories was chosen the album of the week on the Finnish Broadcasting Corporation some time in the early 70s. Actually it was Mr. Tanner who got me hooked, and Mail Order Annie, too. It was the legendary Heikki "Hector" Harma, the grand old man of Finnish rock who introduced Harry and Hector`s cover version of Six-String Ochestra in Finnish is just far out...
  • Favorite Song: I Wonder What Would Happen To This World, Mail Order Annie, Mr. Tanner, Shooting Star
  • Favorite Quote: As far as emotions are concerned: "...never mind your crying. Your tears are sweet rain in my empty life." As far as your whole life is concerned: "...in the final analysis, commitment is, irrespective of whether you win or not, something that truly makes your life more worth while." • Spouse/Significant Other: Birgit, a woman who shares a remarkable number of my tastes.
  • Children: Just Say No! A cat and two sportscars are all the kids I need.
  • Notes: I was introduced to Harry when I was 14, by a friend of my father, who lent me two of his LPs. I sat up listening to them until about four in the morning, and couldn't believe that he was singing about things I had thought were unique to me because nobody talked about them. His songs have formed a soundtrack to my life ever since, and Harry will always be the friend I never met.
  • Favorite Song: Impossible! I'll go as far as favourite album: Heads & Tales.
  • Favorite Quote: "All I've got is time. Nothing else is mine. All I want is you, and one more tomorrow [...] I've had my share of heartaches, misfortune and mistakes. Occasionally this life has left me battered. But I can't blame no-one else. 'Cos what I've done to myself is the only kind of history that matters."

  • Notes: I first heard the song Cat's in the Cradle. I always thought it was by Guns N' Roses. But I found out recently it wasn't. I recieved a link to Chapin Music and I really got into his music... (You don't have to remind me about this never-ending huge fragment of a sentence.)
  • Favorite Song: Cat's In The Cradle made me cry. But I love Jenny (which is the perfect love song, I think.)
  • Favorite Quote: I'm not that well educated about Harry, but I do know he was an social activist, and I was touched by Tom Chapin's quote about passing the music on... "For the good times and the high times, Through the suffering and pain; It's the song of generations singing in my veins. I still hear that old time music of good friends now long gone. I am here tonight to pass the music on." - Tom Chapin

  • Children: Derek, Amanda & Shayna
  • Notes: I have been a Harry Chapin fan for 32 yrs. I have LOVED Harry's music from the age of 14 when I first heard Taxi played on the radio, bought Heads & Tales and was immediately "HOOKED" although Taxi was the "Hit" song on the album Any Old Kind Of Day and Dogtown quickly became my favorites at the time. Needless to say I subsequently bought each new album as it came out. Harry Chapin was/is my source of comfort, dedication and inspiration to be the person I am today.
  • Favorite Song:All of them!
  • Favorite Quote: "Our lives are to be used and thus to be lived as fully as possible, And truely it seems that we are never SO ALIVE as when we involve ourselves with other people."

  • Age/Born: December 31, 1968
  • Spouse/Significant Other: Antoinnette (Unfortunately, she is not a fan of MOST of the music that I listen to, including Harry.)
  • Children: 9 yr old twins - Tyler & Skye; 1.5 yr old toddler - Colin
  • Notes: Technically a Chapin fan for life (I remember thoroughly enjoying Cats and Taxi as a child whenever they came on the radio), but I didn't become a full-blown fan until I picked up a copy of the Harry Chapin Anthology (1982/1983?), shortly followed by Greatest Stories Live. GSL sealed the deal for me, and I probably combed the record shops for every HC album over the week that followed! I also distinctly remember watching the Hamilton, Ontario concert on PBS with my parents, but I can't remember if it was before, or after Harry "took off for the sky". Nothing could budge me from my pirch in front of that TV until the concert was over. My musical journey took some wild side roads, and some crazy turns over the next few years, but when Harry's albums started to appear on CD, I dove right back in, and have never gone too long without some Harry ever since. Imagine my pleasure when Last Protest Singer came out. "A NEW HARRY CHAPIN ALBUM!!!!" I was in heaven. Thankfully, that was not it for "new" Chapin music. Two "new"songs on the Sequel CD...those fun spoken intros on Gold Metal Collection...Onward and Upwards...The Night That Made America Famous...Songwriter...and now I'm enjoying the many wonderful concerts that other fans have so kind to provide to me! It is so wonderful that there always seems to be something "new" around the corner.
  • Favorite Quote: There are so many lines from Harry's songs that lift me up and make me glad to be alive, but I think my favorite would have to be "...Daddy...daddy...daddy, please....I'm ready to dream again..." (All the wonders of the world come from the mouths of babes.)

  • Children: Matthew 18/06/03. His name was taken from my middle name. I have a poor memory, what can I say.
  • Notes: As you probably guessed, I'm a huge Star Wars fan. But when it comes to music there was only one choice. I first heard Harry on a late nite radio show by a guy called Bob Harris (check out www.bbc.co.uk/radio2). Bob plays some fantastic music and got me into songs where the words are more than just lines that rhyme (Diane Warren, Don Mclean, etc). Cat's In The Cradle blew me away. When I finally managed to track down Greatest Stories Live I played it nonstop, and still do. I'm trying to get a copy of every song Harry recorded, that is my labour of love. I'll admit it, I love a good story. Harry has a song for every mood and occassion. There has been many evenings when Gary, Jack and Harry have got together for some loooooong conversations. By the way that's Gary Leonard, Jack Daniels and Harry Chapin.
  • Favorite Song: That's a difficult one. If I was pushed I'd probably say Story Of A Life, or Cat's In The Cradle, then again there is always 30,000...
  • Favorite Quote: "Sometimes words can serve me well and sometimes words can go to hell." Or the whole speach from Harry's Grandfather on the Gold Medal Collection about "Good tired and Bad tired".
